In short
Picantex does not collect, transmit, sell or share any data. Everything it does happens inside your browser.
What stays on your computer
- Screenshots and annotations are processed locally and are never sent to us or to anyone else.
- To open the editor, each capture, and each image you open in it, is kept temporarily in the storage that the browser reserves for the extension, together with the text the page was showing, so that you can copy it from the editor. Those older than 24 hours are deleted automatically the next time you capture or open something, or when Chrome starts again. You can also empty this storage at any time from Picantex's Help page, and everything is removed when you uninstall the extension.
- The pages you add to the multi-page document are kept in the same storage until you empty the document.
- A PDF you open is read on your computer; the pages you choose become images kept in the same way as captures. The PDF is never sent anywhere.
- The language you choose in the editor, the choice of scrolling inner sections, the fact that you have seen the notice about opening PDFs and whether the verification tools are on are saved locally, so that they are remembered. In the same way the editor remembers three conveniences: the last save format, the document's page layout and whether its panel was open.
- The verification tools are off until you turn them on. With them on, Picantex computes on your computer the SHA-256 fingerprint of each file you save, and shows it only to you; the files you save carry a stamp with the full address of the page, saved from the internet or loaded from the device, its title, and the date and time of capture, in the file's properties and, except for the title, in a strip under the image. With them off, nothing about where an image comes from is written into the files or into the suggested file name.
- Saved files go only where you choose in the save dialog.
Permissions and why they are needed
- activeTab: to capture the tab you are looking at, only when you click the icon or the right-click menu; and, if that tab shows a PDF or an image, to open that same file in Picantex when you ask.
- scripting: to draw the selection rectangle on the page, to scroll it when capturing the full page, to read the text it shows so that you can copy it from the editor, to recognise a PDF or an image shown in the tab and, when the site requires it, to read that file from inside the tab.
- contextMenus: to add the capture commands to the right-click menu.
- downloads: to save the file where you choose.
- storage: to remember the language you chose, whether inner sections are scrolled, that you have seen the notice about PDFs and whether the verification tools are on.
The PDF reader
To read PDFs, Picantex includes PDF.js, made by Mozilla and released under the Apache 2.0 licence. It is part of the extension, not loaded from the internet, and it runs only when you open a PDF. It works in an isolated page that cannot use the extension's functions, cannot see Picantex's storage and is forbidden from making any connection: it receives the PDF you open and returns only images of its pages and their text.
What Picantex does not do
No analytics, no advertising, no accounts, no code loaded from the internet, no third-party services.
Picantex does not connect to any service, its own or anyone else's. The only network request is the one you ask for, when you open in Picantex a PDF or an image shown in a tab: the file is downloaded again from the same site, as the tab would do.
This website
This site uses no cookies and no analytics. Like any web server, the one that hosts it keeps technical access logs (IP address, date and time, page requested, browser), used only for security and troubleshooting.
If you write to us
If you email us for support, we receive your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever you write or attach.
We use this information only to answer your request, which is also the legal basis for handling it. We never use it for marketing and we do not pass it on to anyone.
Messages are deleted permanently once your request is closed, and in any case no later than 15 days after the last message.
You can ask at any time for a copy of your data, for corrections or for immediate deletion by writing to the address below. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority (in Italy, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali).
